Electric Car Charger Installation Cost Australia 2025

Last week I quoted a client in Brisbane $2,350 for a simple 7 kW single-phase outdoor Zappi he nearly fell off his chair because another company quoted him $4,800 for exactly the same job. After doing over 500 installations myself and reviewing thousands of quotes for customers, I can tell you exactly what you should be paying in 2025 no fluff, no hidden extras.

State-by-state average costs (November 2025 data from my jobs + installer network)

State Average 7 kW Install Average 22 kW Install Notes
Sydney NSW $2,580 $4,880 Highest labour rates
Melbourne VIC $2,460 $4,620 Cheapest metro
Brisbane/Gold Coast QLD $2,610 $4,950 Hot + humid = more outdoor work
Perth WA $2,790 $5,300 Highest freight + labour
Adelaide SA $2,390 $4,510 Lowest average
Regional (100 km+ from capital) + $380 $920 Travel charges apply

Why do some companies quote $4,000$8,000 for the same job?

Common tricks I see every week:

  1. Marking up chargers 100%+ (buying Zappi for $1,200, charging $2,800)
  2. Adding “project management fees” or “compliance fees”
  3. Quoting unnecessary switchboard upgrades
  4. Bundling with overpriced solar/battery packages

Before and after switchboard that actually needed upgrade vs ones that dont

Left: genuinely needed $4,800 upgrade. Right: 90% of boards I see no upgrade required

When do you actually need a switchboard upgrade in 2025?

Only ~11% of my jobs need one. You probably DON’T need it if your main breaker is 63 A+ and you have spare ways.

How to get the best price (my exact checklist)

  1. Get 3 written quotes from CEC-accredited installers
  2. Ask for itemised pricing (charger separate from labour)
  3. Specify you want surface conduit (cheaper than underground)
  4. Mention you already have solar + want ChargeHQ integration (many give discount)

Frequently Asked Questions EV Charger Cost 2025

Is it cheaper to buy the charger myself?

Yes saves $400$1,200. I always encourage it and simply deduct the charger cost from my quote.

Are there any government rebates left in 2025?

Only the ACT still offers $2,000 and a few local councils have small incentives. Everywhere else (NSW, VIC, QLD, etc.) the rebates ended in 2024.

Can I claim it on tax?

Yes if used for work or commuting, the instant asset write-off under $20k still applies for the 202526 financial year.

Is three-phase worth the extra cost?

Only if you already have (or plan to get) three-phase power and your car supports 22 kW charging (e.g. BYD, Renault, Tesla with the upgrade). Otherwise single-phase 711 kW is perfectly fine and much cheaper.

How much to add solar integration?

Usually $0 extra ChargeHQ or the charger’s built-in solar mode is completely free with good chargers like Zappi, Wattpilot or Wallbox.

What’s the cheapest reliable setup?

7 kW Wallbox Pulsar Plus + 8 m cable run = $1,750 total (real job I completed last month in Adelaide).

Do you offer payment plans?

Many installers (including all the ones I recommend) offer 0% interest plans through Brighte, Plenti or Zip 636 months, no extra cost.

Will prices drop in 2026?

Slightly yes charger hardware is falling 812% per year, but labour rates are rising. Overall you’ll probably save $150$300 compared to 2025.
